U.S. Marines --The Few, The Proud

The first Marine Corps was established on November 10, 1775, by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress during the American Revolutionary War. Captain Samuel Nicholas was commissioned to raise 2 battalions of Marines, known as Continental Marines. This fighting force was formed in Philadelphia at Tun Tavern. At the end of the war in April of 1783, the Continental Marines were disbanded.
In 1798 the the Continental Marines were reestablished as the United States Marine Corps in order to fight in the Quasi-War with France, an undeclared war with France that began in 1798 and ended in 1800. Originally founded to serve as an infantry unit aboard naval ships they were tasked with protecting the ships and crews in offensive and defensive boarding missions.
Today's Marines are a fighting task force and involved with the responsibility of national security. Their expertise in amphibious, air and ground tactical warfare with capabilities to attack from sea, air and ground make them a formidable force against both conventional and non conventional enemy forces.
The Marine motto Semper Fideles or commonly known as Semper Fi is Latin for "Always faithful" Their emblem is the Eagle, Globe and Anchor which is included in the Marine Corps seal which is proudly displayed in the flag of the United States Marine Corps. Their official colors are scarlet and gold.
