Memorial Day

This holiday that commemorates those men and women who gave their lives in the service of their country gives us an opportunity to reflect about what America is and what America stands for. It's a day to give homage to these brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and for their fellow man, giving their lives so others can enjoy the freedoms of our great land. These heroes, our brothers, our sisters, our families, all of America can be proud of each and everyone of these patriots.
The origins of the first Memorial Day event is hazy to say the least. There are more than two dozen cities and towns that claim they originated and celebrated the first Memorial Day. If you think about it, beginning with the thirteen colonies and the Revolutionary War that insured our freedom, honoring those that perished defending our way of life is a natural event. Whether in a small town or big city the return of the men and women who gallantly defended our nation has always been a celebrated day no matter what date or day.
Historically this holiday was made official in 1868 by General John Logan , the National Commander of the Grand Army. The holiday was observed on May 30, 1868 with placing flowers on the graves of the union and confederate soldiers who died in battle. It was not until 1971 that Congress passed The National Holiday Act that made the last Monday of the month of May the official day of observance and made it a federal law giving all government employees the day off.
Memorial Day should be even more meaningful to all Americans this year. Everyday the men and women of our armed forces, here and abroad are in harms way. From Iraq to Afghanistan to our own shores these brave Americans are at risk as targets to the terrorists whose goal is to destroy our way of life. Don't ever forget this date, November 5, 2009, when at Fort Hood a terrorist, an American born Muslim of Palestine descent, opened fire on unsuspecting soldiers killing 12 innocent people. Don't forget May 1, 2010, and the attempted bombing of innocent civilians in New York City's Time Square. This crime was perpetrated by a Pakistani born Connecticut resident. The Pakistani Taliban is also connected to this cowardly attempt at this act of terror. Never forget September 11, 2001, the unprovoked attack on our country with the killing of almost 3,000 people. From the brave NY police and firemen to the civilians who were going about their everyday business killed with no provocation, their only crime was to an American.
Celebrate these heroes of freedom, these martyrs of liberty, celebrate this Memorial Day. If you have a loved one or friend in the armed services or perhaps a relative or neighbor who is a veteran visit the Mall4Men . They feature military rings , military clocks, and military watches.
