History of Swarovski Crystals

Daniel Swarovski was born in Bohemia in 1862. Bohemia, at the time, was one of the most important centers for glass and crystal making. Daniel's father owned a small factory where crystal was cut.

As a young boy he watched his father in his factory and began learning the fine craft of cutting crystal. When Daniel was older he finished his apprenticeship with his father as well as with several other crystal cutting factories in the adjacent areas.

At the age of 21, Daniel went to the first "Electrical Exhibition" in Vienna. This is where he got the idea for a crystal cutting machine. With the application of electricity he began a labor of love that took him over 9 years to develop and patent his machine - a crystal cutting machine that was faster and more precise than the manual work that was currently being used.

This remarkable event was the beginning of a new era in the crystal industry that is still the basis of this industry in today's modern world. He founded his own company in 1895.

In the mid 1970's, the company became a the major supplier of the Mood Stone. This stone changes color according to the mood of the person wearing or holding it.

In 1995, with the advent of computers, Swarovski was able to develop a high tech cutting technique that could, with finite perfection, cut hard materials, such as crystal and gems, into precise multi faceted directions.

Today, there are over 40 distribution outlets for Swarovski Crystal and their other products.
