Cubic Zirconia

In 1937 Cubic Zirconia was discovered by two German mineralogists. It was found in a natural state in a Zircon. The Zircon contained tiny crystals that were in a cubic form of zirconium oxide. At the time the two mineralogists thought so little of their discovery that they did not give it a name. This is why it is still known by its scientific name cubic zirconia.
In the early 1970’s Cubic Zirconias were first grown in a laboratory by Soviet scientists, but it wasn’t until the mid-70s that CZs (cubic zirconias) were mass produced and marketed by a world renowned Australian producer of leaded crystal, Swarovski & Co.
By 1976, cubic zirconia diamonds became the most gemologically and economically important competitor for diamonds. What was once only affordable to a certain few was now available to all. As compared to diamonds, CZ’s look identical to good quality diamonds. A diamond has a bit more sparkle than a CZ but the CZ has more fire and flash of color.
Besides clear diamond CZ’s these gems come in an array of colors. From red to pink to yellow to lilac to blue or black, the number of different colors is as long as it is endless. The mixing and matching of compounds such as cobalt, nickle, iron, cerium oxide, ebrium oxide etc… gives an endless possibility of that flash of color that these gems are so famous for.
